Combat Wings of the USAAF WWII

As the USAAF grew, some aspects became too large for the structured command that was currently in place. By sub-dividing these air forces, they were able to disperse responsibility across a wider level of responsibility. These became the Divisions included in the previous page.

Below these Divisions (or wider known Commands) are the combat wings. These wings formed the front line services that took the war to the enemy.

The lineage of these wings, like the divisions and  Commands, went through a series of changes, names alterations, formations and demobilisation. Many had their origins long before the war started, and many went on post war to operate in other theatres such as Korea or Vietnam. With the cessation of the second World War, many units were disbanded, the aircraft scrapped and staff demobbed. Some units were then combined and re-designated as either the same unit or as part of another.

Here we concentrate solely on the changes and operations that occurred across the Second World War and not those that occurred pre or post war.  Where dates appear after the Wing had been disbanded, they would have been reformed to continue operations elsewhere.
